Norbert Villy Stonemason.

Norbert Villy was born in Belfort, France in 1949. His father Paul Villy and grandfather were both monumental stonemasons.

In 1953 Paul brought his family to Australia where he continued his trade as a stonemason, working on the restoration of many of the old buildings around Sydney. Norbert served his apprenticeship with his father commencing in 1964, completing his ticket as a Master Mason five years later.

Norbert moved to Tasmania in 1995 and now resides in Gardners Bay. His greatest love and specialty is free carving in sandstone. He has sold sculptures and headstones in Sydney and Tasmania and some examples of these, and his stone building work, may be seen in the Lower Channel area. Norbert does not use any mechanical aids when sculpting, all his work being undertaken using traditional hand cutting tools.
